Arseniy "ArsZeeqq" Usov talked to Michael “Olsior” Zverev, a former LoL caster who is now commentating Dota 2 in Maincast's studio, after Virtus.pro victory at the Autumn Brawl. VP’s new coach talked about the coaching process in the team, the current patch and process of preparing strategies.
Getting used to the role in a new team
Everything is going at its own pace, still a bit unusual for me that the team is of such a high level, but this will pass. Regarding drafts, I’m the one to hit the hero pick button. Me and RAMZES666 constantly advise each other, like the first day I arrived!
Not picking Dark Willow
Yeah, we don’t rate Dark Willow too high on our list, plus it’s difficult to build a draft with her. The fact that she has been running around with a Godlike streak in the second map [NoPangolier vs VP at Maincast Autumn Brawl grand finals], wasn’t to the credit of that hero itself at all.
Amount of strategies you need to prepare to win an event
I don’t know how much you need to win an event, to be honest. The amount of strategies should be growing to infinity, there is a ton of possibilities opening up as early as after the first or second ban. We try to give life to any draft or opening plan we come up with, if this is necessary. It’s better to have a ton of good and at the same time proven strategies :).
NoPangolier surprise in the tournament
NoPango were more of a surprise in drafts and preparations for the match. They were magnitudes better in that regard than other teams in this event. Regarding the first map draft: Treant Protector was messing with our play, it’s an uncomfortable hero for us that soft-counters a few of our favorite heroes, so we hard to pick others, ending up in a mess. If we’d have picked the heroes that Treant blocked, things would’ve went easier in my opinion.
Other CIS teams
It’s hard to say [who is better in drafts and who is better in execution]. Meta is slowly shifting every day and some teams don’t want to adapt, while others come up with things that don’t have a place here. I would note Ferzee [now picked up by Gambit Esports], they draft almost always very well (except their games against NoPangolier).
Preparing strategies despite losing interest in the game
I do play Dota, but not nearly as much as I used to. I’m coming up with new things relatively easy. If I have some idea, I go theorycraft it in pubs, that’s the time when I actually play Dota. I watch a lot of drafts and games, if something comes to my head, I tell the guy that they need to practice some heroes in pubs, so they would be prepared to show their best in scrims. Players share their feedback or say that they want to play something else that works better for them.
Drafter and captain in VP
Drafter doesn’t necessarily have to be a captain and in-game leader. Officially, RAMZES is the captain, but as I see it, this is a rudimentary title when all five players are talented and are able to lead others when a situation arises. A captain is more of a person who has a bit of a higher priority towards global decisions.
Responsibility or nervousness for an important game
It doesn’t affect my drafts at all. You have to have a mindset of imagining not people playing against you, but some computer like in a chess match. I never had nerves play a joke on me during drafts, some weird ideas do come up, but not due to nerves at all.
Opinion on the current patch, 7.19
I’ll speak for myself: every two-three days I find something new and suggest to try it out with the team. The meta is constantly moving and Dota is very interesting right now. Making an excuse for your losses about getting tired of a patch is wrong in my opinion. Pubs, though, are a completely different story...
Virtus.pro made only one change after the mildly disappointing 5-6th place finish at The International 2018. Arseniy "ArsZeeqq" Usov replaced Ivan "ArtStyle" Antonov as a coach in September 18, due to the team choosing to focus more on drafts. Virtus.pro have already qualified for the new season’s first Major: The Kuala Lumpur Major and confidently won the Maincast Autumn Brawl online cup.
